can anyone recommend any vst/au compressors that are really good for creatively misusing? ive been playing around with compression a lot more as a sound design tool and ive had some hit and miss results.

any tips on abusing a compressor in sonically pleasing ways?

thanks, i have this (but forgot about it) and i do like the compressor on it....though the distortion on it isn't my cup of tea most of the time.

i am looking for something like the jlimit in buzz that i can put over the entire mix...when you overdrive it it squashes everything in this really musical way...when i do the same thing in logic (send a small blast of overcompressed brown noise into it) it sounds more like volume ducking for a voice over. Logic's compressors are really nice but they aren't doing what i want here.

it's great for a master compressor

apparently the waves ssl analogue one is meant to be good too, but i've never used it

i use the ssl compressor for mastering and it definitely adds colour. it seems to add a fair bit of click to kicks and overall has a pretty nice sound to just drop in as a mastering compressor.

stillwell audio Rocket

great compressor for adding crunch, thickness, distortion. also has a high pass filter on it that lets you trigger the compression based on high frequency, you can get some huge bass using this.

You usually deck the block to get the pistons just about level, or a head gasket above, and then play with the head to get the required compression...
